Vintage Samsonite Luggage Creates Travel Nostalgia
Sep 24th, 2008 by Savvy Traveler
Are you old enough to remember packing up the family car with hard-sided vintage Samsonite luggage, a cooler full of lunch supplies and snacks and heading off on vacation for the week? Most people don’t use hard luggage anymore for regular vacations and travel, but many still feel warm inside when they think back to the way those old suitcases looked.
I was just a kid when soft-sided canvas and leather luggage became the norm but I can still remember my first suitcase - a hard-sided bright red Samsonite. The perfect suitcase for a little girl… until you you got the thing packed as full as it could get. Those things were incredibly heavy!
For travel these days, this old, clunky luggage doesn’t make much sense. Suitcases and garment bags with wheels are much easier to maneuver and are designed to keep clothes and travel items secure. But, there’s a group of collectors who just love those old vintage Samsonite luggage bags and intend to grow their antique collection every time someone throws them out.
