The Dupont Planetarium in Aiken is located inside the Ruth Patrick Science Education Center at the University of South Carolina. It is a planetarium for all audiences, and measures 30 feet in diameter. The picture quality is top notch, as the system is designed by Sky-Skan and can project films using all-sky technology, video and panoramic views. The planetarium can also show over 9,000 stars and has a state-of-the-art obscura device for showing real time images.
The Dupont planetarium can seat 45 people in all and offers “edutainment” to young school students as well as older college students. Some of the recent films shown include “Blown Away: The Wild World of Weather”, “Explorers of Mauna Kea” and “Mission to Mars.” In addition to the planetarium the center also has two large sundials and several powerful telescopes like the the Dobsonian reflecting telescope and the Meade Schmidt-Cassegrain catadioptric telescope, which will pique your intellectual curiosity.
The planetarium first opened in 1995 and continues to entertain and enlighten the many impressionable and ambitious minds that visit. This is an ideal group activity for field trips or even birthday parties. Come experience one of the best attractions for South Carolinians young and old!
